A simple mention of the Kentucky Derby immediately brings to mind images of powerful racehorses thundering down the track, fashionable ladies in elaborate, feathery hats, and screaming fans urging their Derby pick to victory.
But do you know how it all started? Neither did we, two native Kentuckians, and what better time to address that deficit than on this very special occasion… the historic 150th running of the Kentucky Derby!
In honor of this event, not only are we focusing this special ‘Varietea’ episode on the history of the Kentucky Derby, but we are also releasing it early so that it will hit your feed before the big day!
Who founded the Kentucky Derby, and how did the traditions originate? What significant but often forgotten role did Black jockeys play in the history of the Derby? Which jockeys and horses have set themselves apart over the years? And what special projects have been underway in preparation for this 150th anniversary?
These are just a few of the many questions we address in this fun episode. So go, baby, go!... right on over to that link in the bio. We bet you won’t regret it.

As both the recent media frenzy over Kate Middleton’s disappearance and the popularity of the Netflix series “The Crown” demonstrate, the public’s interest in the Royal Family has not only remained strong over the decades, at some points, it has even bordered on obsessive.
And no one’s life serves as a better illustration of this point than Diana, Princess of Wales, whose brother Charles spoke these words in her eulogy: “...of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this– a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.”
Calling heavily on Diana’s own perspective, as shared in her recorded interviews from “Diana: In Her Own Words” (National Geographic), in this powerful episode we discuss the life and legacy of Diana, the People’s Princess. From her self-described unhappy childhood, to the issues with mental health and infidelity that plagued her marriage, to Diana’s death and the conspiracy theories that surrounded it, we discuss all this and so much more.
So be sure to join us for this goodbye to England’s Rose, a woman who touched the world with the example she set as both a public figure and mother, as well as her fashion sense, humanitarian efforts, and incredible relatability.

Millions of people, including the usually stoic Simon Cowell, were moved by Nightbirde’s story and original song “It’s OK” when she auditioned on America’s Got Talent in June of 2021, earning a golden buzzer.
Sadly, the talented singer, songwriter, and poet, whose real name is Jane Marczewski, was forced to resign from the competition a few months later to focus on her health, after receiving devastating news regarding her cancer’s progression.
But that did not mean the artist stepped out of the spotlight. Rather, the world watched in awe and admiration as Nightbirde navigated the final 6 months of her life with rebellious hope, continuing to make music and inspire us all with her dogged determination to live life to the fullest.
With the help of audio clips from Jane’s brother, Mitch Marczewski, we share Nightbirde’s story in this uplifting episode. Join us as we discuss Jane’s life, dreams, faith, and legacy, including the Nightbirde Foundation (nightbirdefoundation.org), an organization started and run by Jane’s family in her honor, for the purpose of bringing hope and healing to others battling cancer.
A special thank you to Mitch Marczewski for his participation in this tribute to Nightbirde.

With a last-second shot from the star shooter, the underdog team defeats its powerhouse opponent, becoming the smallest school ever to win the state basketball championship.
Sound like the ending of “Hoosiers”? It should, because it’s what happened in the true story that inspired the beloved film.
Referred to as the Milan Miracle, in 1954 the Milan High School Indians defeated the Muncie Central Bearcats in front of an audience of 15,000 at Butler Fieldhouse. And on March 23, 2024, we were there at Milan High School, along with close to 2000 others, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of that feat.
In this fun ‘Varie-tea’ episode we take you along on our field trip, giving you the flavor of the event and its featured guests, including “Hoosier’s” screenwriter Angelo Pizzo and actors Brad Long and Steve Hollar, the current and former Indiana governor, and the miracle workers themselves. If you’re a fan of basketball, “Hoosiers,” or an inspirational sports story, this is one you won’t want to miss.

“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.”
Tragically, these words found at the start of Matthew Perry’s 2022 memoir turned out to be prophetic. Less than a year later the world was stunned to learn of his passing on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54.
This week, using his very personal book “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir” as our primary basis, we discuss the life and legacy of Matthew Perry, who asked to be remembered first as a helper.
How did Matthew’s childhood fear of abandonment and his identity as a “lonely child” affect his adult relationships? What incident during a movie shoot started him on his path toward addiction? What important messages about alcoholism and drug dependency did Matthew want us to understand? And in what ways was the actor simultaneously exactly like and also the polar opposite of the beloved character he portrayed on “Friends”? These are just a few of the many points we discuss in this moving episode.
Could we BE any more honored to offer this farewell to Matthew Perry, a talented artist, advocate, and– yes– friend? Please join us.

“I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.”
These were the words written by 15-year-old Anne Frank just months before Nazis raided the Secret Annex and sent the inhabitants to concentration camps, where all but her father ultimately perished.
One of the most well-known teens in history, this extraordinary young woman’s work, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, ranks among the top-10 best-selling nonfiction books of all time and has been translated into more than 70 languages.
How did Anne’s family end up in the Secret Annex along with the other inhabitants, and what challenges did they face while in hiding? What new discoveries about Anne’s story have come to light in more recent years? How do the  A, B, and C versions of Anne’s diary differ? And do we finally have an answer to the mystery of who betrayed the Secret Annex families? Join us for this moving episode where we discuss all this and so much more!

You know him as “Buddy,” the team captain who sported #14 on the Hickory High basketball team… once he rejoined, that is.
But in real life, he’s actor and motivational speaker Brad Long, and in this fascinating episode he speaks with Candy and Ashley about his life-changing experience filming the movie “Hoosiers.”
You won’t want to miss this conversation during which Brad answers questions that have lingered for nearly 40 years…
What was it like to work with film legend Gene Hackman? What strategies were used to help the young basketball players bond, and what hijinks did they get up to when not filming? What happens in that famous cut scene that explains how Buddy ended up back on the team? And, on a sad note, how did Brad’s son pay tribute to the late Kent Poole, who portrayed teammate Merle Webb in the film?
Be sure to join us as we discuss all this and so much more. The show is also available on your favorite podcatcher and the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel.

Gene Hackman feared that starring in the movie “Hoosiers” would kill his career.
Instead, 38 years after its release in 1986, “Hoosiers” remains one of the most beloved sports movies of all time.
Suggested by listener Merle, who served as an extra during the filming of “Hoosiers,” this lively episode takes you back to 1985, when this soon-to-be classic was filmed.
What true life story inspired “Hoosiers,” and how was the making of the movie its own underdog story? How were the Hickory basketball players cast? What’s the true story behind the rumors of Gene Hackman’s surliness and Barbara Hershey’s unhappiness during filming? And what is it about “Hoosiers” that has made it so enduring?
We discuss all this and so much more this week on Scandal Water!

Beefed up physiques covered with a sheen of body oil. Stage names like “The Undertaker” and “The Animal.” Entrances accompanied by loud music and deafening cheers (or boos). Action-packed matches, sometimes involving objects like metal chairs or thumbtacks.
These are just a few of the elements that might spring to mind at the mention of pro wrestling, but the sport is so much more than that.
What role did the carnival play in the development of professional wrestling? How accurate is the depiction of the Louisville area wrestling scene and the aspiring wrestlers of the OVW, as seen in the Netflix docuseries “Wrestlers”?  How do athletes and fans of the sport respond to claims that pro wrestling is fake? What did Al Snow– a former WWE wrestler who now helps run the OVW– mean when he stated that pro wrestling is the art of physical storytelling?
With help from pro wrestling fans Chris, Chandra, and Steve, we delve into these questions, and so much more! Candy and Ashley even brainstorm their own potential wrestling stage names… although suggestions are always welcome. ;)

It’s a movie that simultaneously highlights the impact of women during a critical time in U.S. history, celebrates the bonds of sisterhood, and explores the dynamics of sibling rivalry.
It also happens to be one of America’s most beloved sports films, and to this day, remains the highest-grossing baseball movie of all time.
We are of course talking about the 1992 hit “A League of Their Own,” directed by Penny Marshall and boasting a powerhouse cast including Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, and Jon Lovitz.
From behind-the-scenes stories about filming to the tension caused by Madonna’s casting, to the controversial scene cut from the movie, to the hotly debated question of whether Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, we discuss all this and so much more!  *A special thank you to friend and listener Marsha for her audio clip.
