Picture yourself alone in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean during the worst hurricane season on record. Your boat has no motor or sail, and you’ve lost all communication with those on shore. Your watertight sleeping area is the size of a double-wide coffin, and as the hurricane rages outside, waves frequently pound your little rowboat with the force of a small car crash, pitching your body all around that tiny space.
While this probably sounds more than a bit daunting to you, this was the exact situation faced by Louisville resident Tori Murden when in June of 1998 she set off on a quest to become the first woman and the first American to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
She ultimately achieved that goal, thanks to the support of her friends– including words of wisdom from Muhammad Ali and encouragement from Gerard d’Aboville, the first man to row solo across two oceans–the love of the new man in her life, Mac McClure, and a second journey across the ocean.
Tori Murden McClure captured the details of her suspenseful and exciting adventure in “A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean,” which was adapted into the musical “Row” in 2021. And in this week’s episode we have the honor of speaking with her!
Join us for this fascinating interview with author and world record-holder, Tori Murden McClure. Unlike Tori, you can enjoy this hero’s journey from the comfort of your own home!If you'd prefer to view the episode, visit our YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/@scandalwaterpodcast35Support Scandal Water by visiting www.BuyMeaCoffee.com/ScandalWaterPod #ScandalWaterPodcast #TuesdayTea #TheHerosJourney #ToriMurdenMcClure #TenacioustoaT #Overcomer #Inspiring #Thanksgiving #HometownHero #MuhammadAli #APearlintheStorm #Row #Musicals #Theatre #Book #Author #APearlintheStorm #Writer #Biography #WorldRecord #Louisville #Kentucky #AtlanticOcean #EmpoweringWomen

“Tina Turner was a global superstar, commanding MTV with her spiky wigs, short skirts, and famously long legs strutting across concert stages in 3-inch heels.
“Her talent earned her acclaim as the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, while her resiliency made her a hero to battered women everywhere. When she sang of pain and heartache in her husky, full-throated voice, every word rang true (CNN).”
This week on Scandal Water Podcast, we pay tribute to legendary Tina Turner, who passed away this past May at the age of 83.
From a childhood where she felt unwanted, to her abusive relationship with husband and bandmate Ike Turner, to the meteoric rise, fall, and rebirth of Tina’s career ( “It wasn’t a comeback, it was a debut,” Tina declared), to the gift from Tina’s second husband that changed her life, we cover all this and so much more.
You won’t want to miss this fascinating look at the inspirational, resilient, and ground-breaking Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. At 33 years old, she is now a billionaire. Her record-breaking Eras Tour has been so successful, when the concert movie was released to theaters last month, it also broke records at the box office. What’s more, through the course of her 18-year music career, she has built a fiercely loyal fan base, offering her the type of support an artist could wish for only in her wildest dreams.
As you know all too well, we are talking about the uber-talented composer, singer, performer, and businesswoman Taylor Swift.
But not everything has gone smoothly for the global superstar. While most have heard the term “Taylor’s Version” and may be aware that “1989: Taylor’s Version” came out October 27th, many don’t fully understand the reason behind the re-recordings.
In this episode we delve into the bad blood that led to“Taylor’s Versions,” discuss Taylor Swift’s impact on the music industry and other artists, share our own reactions to her concert movie, and so much more.
Don’t miss this fun and informative episode about one of the most famous, talented, and influential young artists of this generation, Taylor Swift. You’d never be able to shake it off. ;)
*A special thank you to two Swifties, Mackenzie, and Lizzie, for sharing their insights via audio clips, and to Kennedy for her opening shout out.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than with a tribute to one of the greatest showmen of all time, the legendary escape artist who died on this day 97 years ago… Harry Houdini.
In his heyday, the “King of Handcuffs” was so popular, the verb ‘houdinize’ –meaning to escape confinement–was added to the dictionary, and an estimated crowd of 100,000 once showed up to watch him extricate himself from a straitjacket as he was suspended upside down over a street.
But how did the aspiring magician transform from a circus and vaudeville act to a world-famous escape artist? What were some of the performer’s greatest tricks… and secrets? What caused Houdini’s bitter feud with his former friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Why do some suspect there was foul play involved in Houdini’s death? And why is an Annual Official Houdini Séance still held every Halloween, to this day, in a different city around the globe?
No hocus pocus here! Just a fascinating look at one of the world’s most renowned magicians, Harry Houdini, and the loyal woman who stayed by his side through it all, his wife and stage assistant, Bess.MID-ROLL AD: Send in your listener requests to ScandalWaterPodcast@Gmail.com

Who doesn’t recognize the name Michael Myers, or the haunting, synth-heavy theme song that always announces his arrival… and causes an immediate increase in the audience’s heart rate?
45 years after its release, “Halloween” (1978) is considered one of the most important and influential horror movies of all time. It launched one of the longest-running horror movie franchises, prompted a number of copycat slasher films,  inspired a generation of filmmakers, and introduced the world to the ultimate Final Girl, Laurie Strode.
Just in time for our own Halloween celebrations, we revisit the beloved classic that started it all, “Halloween” (1978).
Was the film really originally titled “The Babysitter Murders”? How did “the shape” morph into the terrifying character Michael Myers, and what’s the story behind his iconic mask? How were Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis cast? What challenges did the crew face when filming a Halloween movie in California in May? And what did director John Carpenter do toward the end of the editing process that some believe “saved” the movie?
We discuss all this and more, this week on Scandal Water. So yes, Tommy, there is a boogeyman, and we take a trip to Haddonfield to visit him in this fun “Halloween” episode!MID-ROLL AD: Support Scandal Water Podcast by following us on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, X (formerly known as Twitter), and Youtube. This episode of Scandal Water contains adult themes and descriptions of violence. It is not intended for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised.
On Saturday, July 1, 1916, a dark, handsome, 25-year-old businessman named Charles Vansant (“Van”) arrived in the resort town of Beach Haven to celebrate the 4th of July weekend with his family.
But Van’s decision to take a quick dip in the ocean before dinner would turn out to be a fatal one. While his sister watched from the shore alongside other spectators, Van let out a piercing scream and began to swim wildly for shore. When he was about 50 yards away, suddenly a pool of blood surrounded the thrashing man– and when the lifeguard and two local men tried to pull Van to shore, a shark was still latched onto his leg.
Despite heroic efforts to save him, Charles Vansant tragically passed away that night. His death was the first recorded fatality by shark attack in the history of the eastern United States… but only the first that occurred that fateful 4th of July weekend. Before it was over, that same shark would take several more lives in 4 separate attacks that occurred along the Jersey Shore.

The dark forest looms ahead, trees towering on either side. There’s a nip in the crisp autumn air, and leaves crunch beneath the walkers’ feet. Then suddenly the sound of maniacal laughter fills the air, and the path is illuminated by not one, but thousands of glowing, elaborately carved pumpkins.
While this may sound like the start of a horror movie, it’s actually the fun, family-friendly experience that awaits you upon visiting the Louisville Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, one of the city’s most popular and unique Halloween events.
Over 100,000 visitors attended last year, from all 50 states, to walk the trail in Iroquois Park and view the artistic display created through the use of 5,000 pumpkins… which begs the question: But how do they DO that?
This fun episode is designed to answer just that! Join Candy and Ashley on their field trip to the Louisville Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular, where they’ll take you behind the scenes to watch a pumpkin artist in action and speak with four people who help ensure the beloved annual event is always “lit”...  Brooke Pardue, Alene Day, Travis Reckner, and Morgan Reining.
Where did the idea of a Jack O’Lantern Spectacular first originate, and how did Louisville come to be one of only 3 cities in the U.S. to host this annual event? How does the production team acquire, display, and maintain a “gallery” of 5000 live pumpkins? What process is used by the artists to take a pumpkin from straight-off-the-truck to display-ready? And what does the trail look like when you get a sneak peek on “gutting day,” during the final stages of the lighting process?
Add some fun to your Halloween by first listening to this episode and then heading on out to the Louisville Jack O’Lantern Spectacular. This episode of Scandal Water contains adult themes and descriptions of violence. It is not intended for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised.
“This remains the most bizarre criminal case in American history. There is nothing to match this anywhere. You have all the elements: good families, money, bombs, shoot-outs.”
These are the words of Jerry Bledsoe, author of the book “Bitter Blood: A True Story of Southern Family Pride, Madness, and Multiple Murder,”  which then led to a 1994 made-for-TV miniseries called “In the Best of Families: Marriage, Pride, and Madness”  starring Kelly McGillis, Harry Hamlin, and Keith Carradine.
The first tragedy occurred on Tuesday, July 24, 1984, when a friend discovered 68-year-old Delores Lynch lying on the driveway outside the door to her home. Upon arrival, the police also discovered Delores’s 39-year-old daughter Janie inside. Both women had died from gunshot wounds, and while the murder scene was staged to look like a burglary, it looked more like a professional hit.
Before it was all said and done, 7 more would be dead and two families nearly destroyed.
Join us for this tragic, but fascinating true crime story that feels especially personal to Candy due to a theater connection. *A special thank you to Bill Baker for contributing insights via audio clips.

This episode of Scandal Water contains adult themes and descriptions of violence. It is not intended for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. It’s the 3rd deadliest nightclub fire in US history and the reason you see a maximum capacity sign posted in every restaurant and bar you enter.
Yet many have never heard of the horrific fire that ravaged the Beverly Hills Supper Club in May of 1977, killing 165 people and injuring 200.
Known as the “Showplace of the Midwest,” the opulent, sprawling facility located in Southgate, Kentucky, not only offered event space, but also boasted wildly popular Vegas-style performers and acts.
The evening of May 28, 1977, approximately 1200 people crowded into the cabaret room to see the legendary performer John Davidson, never dreaming their night would end in a nightmare of flames and toxic fumes. Join us as we revisit not only the circumstances behind the tragic Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire, but also the impact it had on fire safety codes and the mystery that still lingers. #BeverlyHillsSupperClub #SupperClub #Nightclub #USHistory #Deadly #ShowplaceoftheMidwest #1970s #Vegas #Kentucky #TrueCrime #JohnDavidson #ScandalWaterPodcast #Podcast #TuesdayTea #History
