Say the name Jim Henson, and many people immediately picture a wise and lovable green frog sitting on a log, singing about rainbows. But the genius of Jim Henson extends even further than his creation of a whole new form of puppetry, the Muppets, and countless individual characters– like Kermit and Miss Piggy– that are beloved by young and old alike. And that’s what we explore in this fun episode. What circumstances led Jim to create the Muppets, and who was his often uncredited partner in the work? Back in the late 60s, how did the Muppets become involved with a ground-breaking new children’s show called “Sesame Street?” What role, if any, did Jim play in bringing Yoda to life? And why do some of the “The Muppet Show” episodes now start with a warning message? We discuss all this and so much more! This episode is for the lovers, dreamers, and any person who has ever smiled at the wit and wisdom of a Muppets character. Please join us. MID-ROLL AD: In our June minisode, Ashley and Candy share a few highlights from their own summer trips… ones that extend from the heights of a castle to the bottom of a canyon! We love sipping the tea with you every week and hope you enjoy this brief, personal glimpse into our private lives. It’s an animated TV show, targeted to preschool children, that centers around a puppy named Bluey, her younger sister Bingo, and her parents, Bandit and Chilli. Each episode runs approximately 7 minutes.
Sounds like a simple concept, right? And yet the show “Bluey,” which first aired in Australia in 2018, is now not only a smash hit, it is a true global phenomenon.
But what is about “Bluey” that has made it so wildly popular –and not just with children, but also their parents?
In this fun episode, we explore that question by digging into the origins of “Bluey,” some of the key features that set it apart from other children’s shows, the genius behind the casting choices, and so much more! We even ask the parents of a toddler– all three avid “Bluey” fans– to weigh in with a few of their thoughts.
So save yourself an “Oh, biscuits!” moment and be sure to join us as we visit everyone’s favorite Blue Heeler, “Bluey.”  The show is also available on your favorite podcast app and the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel.
*A big thank you to Morgan and Michael for their audio clip, and to Katie & Zoey for their shout-out and episode introduction.

Scooby Doo: We See You!

Tuesday Jun 04, 2024

Tuesday Jun 04, 2024

What do WWE wrestlers John Cena and Triple H, the Harlem Globetrotters, Batman and Robin,  Sonny and Cher, and Simon Cowell all have in common?
They’ve all appeared with Scooby Doo at some point over the past 55 years!
Yes, you heard that right… everyone’s favorite cowardly-but-lovable, snack-eating, ghost-hunting Great Dane made his first appearance in 1969, and is still going strong.
But what circumstances led to the development of “Scooby-Doo,” and on what TV characters were the Scooby Gang based? How did Scooby Doo change over the years? And the real question… Scrappy Doo: Love him or hate him?
Jinkies! We discuss all this and so much more. So jump in the Mystery Machine Van and ride along as we unravel the (not-so-challenging) mystery of why “Scooby Doo” remains a beloved cartoon to this day.

It was the decade of grunge, Must See TV that truly felt must-see, boy bands with their synchronized dances, a wry Zach Morris smirking into the camera, and a kind-hearted but ‘clueless’ privileged teenager named Cher.
It may feel like yesterday, but –hold on to your scrunchie–the decade of the 90s is now 25-30 years in the past! And it’s high time we revisited it!
But when considering the time period that brought us classic movies like “Jurassic Park” and “A League of Their Own,” the beanie baby craze, and Mariah Carey, which specific entertainment events or artists did we choose to highlight in this fly episode?Use the link in the bio to find out! You can also listen on your favorite podcast app and the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel.

A Totally Rad 80s Episode

Tuesday May 21, 2024

Tuesday May 21, 2024

Lacy, fingerless gloves. Neon colors. Legwarmers over spandex, with a complementary headband. Parachute pants. Shoulder pads. Swatch watches. Permed hair with massive bangs, plastered in place with hair spray.
If you’ve ever worn any of the above, you’re going to love time-traveling back to the 1980s with us!
What would YOU choose as 3 defining entertainment events, works, or artists of the decade? That’s the question we asked ourselves as we revisited the time period that brought us Gameboys, the VHS craze, Alex P. Keaton, Madonna, and “Cats” on Broadway.
Recognizing that we’ve already featured some 80s megahits like “E.T.” and “Back to the Future” in previous episodes, what OTHER prominent shows, moments, or icons did we highlight in this totally rad 80s episode?
Moonwalk over to the link in the bio, your favorite podcast app, or the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel to find out!

It was the decade that gave us feathered hair ala Farrah Fawcett, bell bottom jeans, a sensational White House scandal, Evil Knievel’s daredevil stunts, and (for many) a phobic fear of swimming in the ocean.
We’re of course talking about the 1970s… and in this far out episode, we take you back there!
From “Happy Days” to “Star Wars” to “Smokey and the Bandit” and its accompanying CB radio craze, we’ve already dedicated several previous episodes to hot 70s topics. But in this fun episode we highlight 3 different prominent entertainment events, works, or artists significant to the decade.
Which ones did we choose? You’ll have to ‘hustle’ over to the link in the bio, your favorite podcast app, or the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel to find out!

A simple mention of the Kentucky Derby immediately brings to mind images of powerful racehorses thundering down the track, fashionable ladies in elaborate, feathery hats, and screaming fans urging their Derby pick to victory.
But do you know how it all started? Neither did we, two native Kentuckians, and what better time to address that deficit than on this very special occasion… the historic 150th running of the Kentucky Derby!
In honor of this event, not only are we focusing this special ‘Varietea’ episode on the history of the Kentucky Derby, but we are also releasing it early so that it will hit your feed before the big day!
Who founded the Kentucky Derby, and how did the traditions originate? What significant but often forgotten role did Black jockeys play in the history of the Derby? Which jockeys and horses have set themselves apart over the years? And what special projects have been underway in preparation for this 150th anniversary?
These are just a few of the many questions we address in this fun episode. So go, baby, go!... right on over to that link in the bio. We bet you won’t regret it.

As both the recent media frenzy over Kate Middleton’s disappearance and the popularity of the Netflix series “The Crown” demonstrate, the public’s interest in the Royal Family has not only remained strong over the decades, at some points, it has even bordered on obsessive.
And no one’s life serves as a better illustration of this point than Diana, Princess of Wales, whose brother Charles spoke these words in her eulogy: “...of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this– a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.”
Calling heavily on Diana’s own perspective, as shared in her recorded interviews from “Diana: In Her Own Words” (National Geographic), in this powerful episode we discuss the life and legacy of Diana, the People’s Princess. From her self-described unhappy childhood, to the issues with mental health and infidelity that plagued her marriage, to Diana’s death and the conspiracy theories that surrounded it, we discuss all this and so much more.
So be sure to join us for this goodbye to England’s Rose, a woman who touched the world with the example she set as both a public figure and mother, as well as her fashion sense, humanitarian efforts, and incredible relatability.

Millions of people, including the usually stoic Simon Cowell, were moved by Nightbirde’s story and original song “It’s OK” when she auditioned on America’s Got Talent in June of 2021, earning a golden buzzer.
Sadly, the talented singer, songwriter, and poet, whose real name is Jane Marczewski, was forced to resign from the competition a few months later to focus on her health, after receiving devastating news regarding her cancer’s progression.
But that did not mean the artist stepped out of the spotlight. Rather, the world watched in awe and admiration as Nightbirde navigated the final 6 months of her life with rebellious hope, continuing to make music and inspire us all with her dogged determination to live life to the fullest.
With the help of audio clips from Jane’s brother, Mitch Marczewski, we share Nightbirde’s story in this uplifting episode. Join us as we discuss Jane’s life, dreams, faith, and legacy, including the Nightbirde Foundation (nightbirdefoundation.org), an organization started and run by Jane’s family in her honor, for the purpose of bringing hope and healing to others battling cancer.
A special thank you to Mitch Marczewski for his participation in this tribute to Nightbirde.

With a last-second shot from the star shooter, the underdog team defeats its powerhouse opponent, becoming the smallest school ever to win the state basketball championship.
Sound like the ending of “Hoosiers”? It should, because it’s what happened in the true story that inspired the beloved film.
Referred to as the Milan Miracle, in 1954 the Milan High School Indians defeated the Muncie Central Bearcats in front of an audience of 15,000 at Butler Fieldhouse. And on March 23, 2024, we were there at Milan High School, along with close to 2000 others, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of that feat.
In this fun ‘Varie-tea’ episode we take you along on our field trip, giving you the flavor of the event and its featured guests, including “Hoosier’s” screenwriter Angelo Pizzo and actors Brad Long and Steve Hollar, the current and former Indiana governor, and the miracle workers themselves. If you’re a fan of basketball, “Hoosiers,” or an inspirational sports story, this is one you won’t want to miss.
