Beefed up physiques covered with a sheen of body oil. Stage names like “The Undertaker” and “The Animal.” Entrances accompanied by loud music and deafening cheers (or boos). Action-packed matches, sometimes involving objects like metal chairs or thumbtacks.
These are just a few of the elements that might spring to mind at the mention of pro wrestling, but the sport is so much more than that.
What role did the carnival play in the development of professional wrestling? How accurate is the depiction of the Louisville area wrestling scene and the aspiring wrestlers of the OVW, as seen in the Netflix docuseries “Wrestlers”? How do athletes and fans of the sport respond to claims that pro wrestling is fake? What did Al Snow– a former WWE wrestler who now helps run the OVW– mean when he stated that pro wrestling is the art of physical storytelling?
With help from pro wrestling fans Chris, Chandra, and Steve, we delve into these questions, and so much more! Candy and Ashley even brainstorm their own potential wrestling stage names… although suggestions are always welcome. ;)

It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words.
But when considering their historical or cultural significance, certain photographs are literally priceless.
In this episode– the topic of which was suggested by listener and friend, Jefferson– we share fascinating behind-the-scenes stories related to 3 of the most celebrated and iconic photographs of the 20th century:
The heart-breaking 1947 “Life” Picture of the Week entitled “The Most Beautiful Suicide”
The jubilant “V-J Day Kiss” featuring the ‘Kissing Sailor’
The disturbing, Pulitzer-Prize winning “Napalm Girl” photograph, with a backstory that ends up being surprisingly uplifting
Berenice Abbott once said, “Photography helps people to see.” You won’t want to miss this engaging episode where we explore 3 iconic photographs that have helped us all see the world in a slightly different way.

Arguably the most famous serial killer of all time, Jack the Ripper has inspired such fascination, the term ‘Ripperology’ was coined to refer to a deep, expert-level study of his crimes, and countless people proudly identify themselves as Ripperologists.
The notorious murderer has also inspired a number of books and movies, including Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 thriller “The Lodger: The Story of the London Fog.”
Based on the very first novelization of the Jack the Ripper case, “The Lodger” builds on one theory considered by the detectives charged with investigating the Ripper murders– was it possible some unwitting landlady was actually harboring the brutal killer in her boarding house?
In this fascinating episode we discuss the true crime that inspired Hitchcock’s silent film “The Lodger,” the infamous Jack the Ripper murders. Not only do we walk through the case still regarded as one of history’s greatest mysteries, but we also share behind-the-scenes stories about the classic thriller.

It features one of the most famous scenes in film history, which happens to take place in a shower. And according to the American Film Institute, it also ranks as the 14th greatest movie of all time.
We are of course talking about Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic horror film “Psycho,” starring Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, and Vera Miles.
But what some may not realize is that the true crime story that inspired Hitchcock’s classic is every bit as infamous and horrific as the movie itself.
In this fascinating episode we not only discuss behind-the scenes stories and analysis of the iconic “Psycho,” but also share the story of serial killer Ed Gein and his shocking crimes.

What happens when a young woman begins to suspect her sophisticated Uncle Charlie– who happens to be staying in her family’s home for a visit– is the notorious “Merry Widow” killer? That’s the question addressed by Hitchcock’s 1943 classic “Shadow of a Doubt.”
The thriller is reportedly Hitchcock’s favorite movie, one that features Teresa Wright as the strong, plucky heroine, and Joseph Cotten in the role of the charming, sociopathic villain.
Tragically, however, the serial killer upon whom this movie is loosely based was even darker and his crimes more horrific than the one Hitchcock brought to life.
In this episode we delve into the true crime behind “Shadow of a Doubt,” the murderous spree of Earle Leonard Nelson– aka “The Gorilla Man” and “The Dark Strangler”-- who has been described as one of the most prolific and feared serial killers of the early 20th century.
