No Angel of Mercy… How Serial Murderer Donald Harvey Was Finally Stopped

This episode of Scandal Water contains adult themes and descriptions of violence. Listener discretion is advised.

In March of 1987, an experienced coroner began a routine autopsy on 44-year-old John Powell, who’d spent months in Drake Memorial Hospital after being critically injured in a motorcycle accident.

But when the coroner detected a subtle smell similar to that of burnt almonds, he suddenly realized Mr. Powell had not died of injuries related to the accident… he’d been murdered with cyanide.

This discovery was only the first step in a chain of events that ultimately led to the capture of Donald Harvey, a serial killer who operated in three different hospitals in Kentucky and Ohio between 1970-1987. Dubbed the Angel of Death, Harvey was ultimately convicted of killing 37 people, although his actual murder count is believed to be higher.

In this episode we discuss the events that transpired– and the people who risked their jobs–in order to end the Angel of Death’s horrific murder spree.
